'I gave a sigh of relief, before the breath caught in my throat as I heard a branch snap. I turned around, with my sword hovering in front of the boy's neck in an instant. He seemed surprised and his dull brown eyes widened for a split-second on his muddy face. Then he had a mischievous grin on his face. "You could kill me right now you know, Hana" He put an annoying emphasis on my name. Who the hell did he think he was? Or maybe who the hell was he? I tried to remember where I had seen this familiar face before, as he carried on talking. "Why don't you?" He taunted. I gulped nervously.
"Because I'm not a traitor." I hoped my lie was adequate as I saw him think it over. He took a step backward. "Of course." He stepped around my shaking sword and looked me in the eyes. It was then that I noticed my sword had singed the tip of one of the strands of his shoulder-length, wavy mud-brown hair. "If you're not a traitor, why aren't you down there with everyone else?"
I cast my mind around nervously for an answer.
"Because...I'm not a people person." '
In a world much like our own, Hana and much of her village is taken. Why? They don't know. Where? Don't know either. All they know is that they are in a place much more advanced than their tiny river village. In a place where walls change and minds can be altered within minutes.
But why?
