"Weeping with an Ancient God" is a novella set in July 1842 in the Marquesas Islands. Melvill, the protagonist, jumps ship from the whaler Acushnet into a wild, savage and exotically beautiful land. Melvill contemplates his dangerous present, sad past and wholly uncertain future on an island teeming with cannibals. The novella, which was named a Best Book of 2015 by Chicago Book Review, is based on the real-life adventures of author Herman Melville ("Moby-Dick") when he was a young seaman. I want to believe that I have grown numb to this reality, but in truth I still hear their songs of anguish in my dreams, and still weep for repentance in the mermaid's arms. In the early days of the new colony of New Zealand, a young whaler struggles to come to terms with his new life, and writes desperate letters to his sister back home in England. But one night he discovers a mermaid in the frigid waters, and their fateful meeting triggers disastrous consequences.

Owen Darling lives a life of crime for the sole purpose of supporting his younger brother, the only family he has left. Matthew Carpenter is a young sailor, just returned from a voyage cut short by no less than a catastrophe on the whaling ship he works for. They both live tremendously different lives. Then one day, the two meet.
