My breath was short and irregular. The city weakly lit by gas lamps. The putrid smell of the Thames. Loud bar noises. The East End district rushed by us in one big blur. We had to hurry. Run faster. A corner. A straight road. An archway. We were getting deeper into the night. Another corner. A dark alley. And here we stopped. Finally, we found her.
