"WE SHALL FIGHT ON THE BEACHES, WE SHALL FIGHT ON THE LANDING GROUNDS" It was right there. It was right in front of them, teasing them by sitting just beyond their reach on the horizon. It was like you could blink and you would be there - you would be home. "WE SHALL FIGHT IN THE FIELDS AND IN THE STREETS" But the bombs reminded them. The fighter planes flew constantly overhead. Each time gunshots ensued, they grew further and further away from home, and they were reminded of the truth. "WE SHALL FIGHT IN THE HILLS" Kris and all other 400,000 soldiers around her were trapped - lined up along the beach of Dunkirk like waiting targets for the Germans. All they could do was wait at the shore with their heads filled with explosions and their eyes on the distant horizon - their hearts on home. Escape seems impossible, and any hope of success or life is fleeting. Harry Styles, a young British soldier, could have never fathomed what horrors he would endure during the world war, but out of all the nightmarish scenes he's lived through - being trapped in Dunkirk is the worst. He does not know if he will be spared from death or be destroyed, blown to pieces by a bomb, or if he will drown in the merciless ocean. All he knows is that he does not want to die. He prays for a way out. Gwendolyn Pierce hated the fact that her brother Tommy had to enlist for the military. She hated not knowing if he or the others she cared about would live. She hated the war. She hated death. But most of all she hated the fact that the women were just expected to sit back and wave with tears in their eyes from the sidelines while the men went and risked their lives. So when the news of the soldiers who are surrounded and stuck in Dunkirk reaches her town - she steals her father's boat and defiantly sets off with her best friend, Vivian, to lead the army of citizens and save the brave soldiers, hoping that Tommy is alive and with them. And along the way, she will find more than she bargained for. But the journey will not be as easy as they would like. A vast, unfamiliar ocean combined with torpedoes and bombs is a recipe for disaster and disaster will strike. Through it all, will the girls and the soldiers come out unscathed?
