Tristesse Kollmann, or Tris, tries to act happy. She tries not to let others see what's happening to her and how it's affecting her. Her family is great. They treat her well, support her, and don't judge her for who she is. But they are naive. They can't see what her boyfriend, Nick, has been doing to her. At school, everything's fairly normal. She gets the occasional bullying, but she stays quiet and keeps herself out of trouble. One day, a new boy comes to her school. Tris wants to be friends with him, but she doesn't know if he wants the same from her. She doesn't know if he'll accept her once he sees the despair hiding behind her smile.
