The Byers family could not have moved back to Hawkins at a worse time. There was an outbreak of the "Hanahaki Disease," and anyone with an unrequited love was vulnerable to becoming infected with flowers growing inside their lungs. Will had heard about this and was fully anticipating the first flower, but instead, he hears his sister coughing in the bathroom.

Mike and Will had been friends since Kindergarten, but now everything was changing. Mikes girlfriend El had returned, Max and Lucas were official and Suzy had moved to Hawkins, meaning Will was alone with his dreaded feelings for Michael "Whipper for El" Wheeler and has to live with the fact they are totally in love and crazy about one another. The party continue to Invite Will to events so he's not left out, but they always do. Not meaning to of course, but they do. Will hurts everyday watching Mike and El fall for each other more day by day. But what Will didn't realise, was Mike feels the same. He's just good at hiding it. But, Mike soon regrets hiding it when something happens to his beloved Will.
