In the forests near León, after the fall of the empire, a child is left to die beneath a ruined stone aqueduct.
The wolves find the infant first.
Winter is harsh. Milk is scarce. The pack debates. But the old she-wolf - scarred and half-blind - chooses the child.
The wolves cannot tell what the humans would call it. The child is small, fierce, and stubborn. It survives.
As the years pass, the child grows lean and strong. The pack treats the child as male, not because they know, but because leadership in the pack follows strength, and strength in wolves is rarely questioned.
