"I'm tired of being afraid."
He paused, studying me. "Then be careful not to trade one kind of fear for another. Melgren doesn't forget. Neither does General Sorrengail. Even if she seems to be the more forgiving one."
"I noticed."
Brennan's expression softened slightly. "For what it's worth, Xaden was proud of you."
I looked up, startled. "He said that?"
"Not in words," Brennan said with a faint smile. "But I know my brother-in-law. He doesn't defend people he doesn't believe in."
When Brennan left, I sat alone in the flickering candlelight, tracing the lines of the map with my fingertips - the same ridges and valleys the Venin now crossed unchecked.
I didn't want power. I didn't want war. I wanted peace. But maybe peace wasn't something people like me got to keep.
Still, Bodhi's words echoed in my mind:
You scare people who like control.
For the first time, that didn't feel like a curse. It felt like armor.
