She killed her twin sister in the egg and now is some sort of monster, one that can't touch anyone without it eventually going up in flames. So when her tribe finally has the chance to send her off to some faraway academy, it makes sense that they do it without hesitation. It isn't like they ever cared about her in the first place; she spent her entire dragonethood in solitude. Now, Smoke has to survive school and the terrifying prospect of interacting with other dragons, which might be turning more dangerous than she originally thought...

Five dragons, five fates. Mako is a former SeaWing heir who abandoned his kingdom. Seafoam is his older sister who was thrown into his position when he left. Neither wants the throne for their own reasons, and neither sibling can be happy if the other is. Macaw is a RainWing. While ordinary at first glance, the fact that he's animus-cursed speaks for itself. His awful luck is reflected on those around him, and when his curse almost kills his favorite sister, he decides it's better not to take chances and leaves the rainforest. Not like anyone would miss him, anyway. Fennec and Solstice are hybrid SandWing refugees. They met when they were younger and have been family-friends ever since a vicious queen intent on purifying the bloodline ascended the throne. They've been forced underground, hiding with others affected. When Solstice's parents are killed during a raid, they realize they need to escape the desert somehow. While not biologically related, they're as good as siblings and vow to stick together. Peppermint is a hybrid. Her parents realized they had rushed into their relationship, more in love with the idea of marriage than each other. They both loved their daughter despite their hostility toward each other, but they weren't ready to be parents. After living on the edge of the tundra for her whole life, Peppermint leaves and searches for something more. When the dragons have a chance meeting in Possibility, they soon realize that maybe it's fate.
