Robbed of her divine powers and secluded within her mountain, Beira, the ancient Queen of Winter, will do the unspeakable to exact her justice, even if she has to employ the help of hags and doom her own children in the process. But as she gains strength, so do her children. * * * * * The Well of Youth is a mythic Fantasy based on loosely interpreted Scottish legends of Beira/Cailleach Bhearra. Content warnings: contains a couple of dark scenes (gore). Recommended reading age: 16+. The art on the cover is mine. #1 on Wattpad in #BadMother stories and for a good reason (as of August 2019). * Winner of EarnestyCommunity Weekly Contest for Memorable Hello. * This story is a backstory to The New Order of Merlin series but can be read independently. There, Beira is the villain. If you're reading The NOOM, to avoid spoilers, I recommend reading this story after you finish Book 1, The Gathering, and Book 2, Cursed, though the real spoilers start at chapter 9 (Raven's Letter). I included a warning at the beginning of that chapter in case you decide to read up to there. Current status: waiting for the plot of Book 2, Cursed, to catch up. * Disclaimer: Starting from Chapter 5, this story blends the myth of Beira with the series The New Order of Merlin (open fanfiction). The Well of Youth will not turn into fanfiction. However, there will be character names mentioned which come from that series. You do not need to read The NOOM or be familiar with any of the fandoms in order to enjoy Beira's tale. After all, THIS is the backstory, not the other way around. But The NOOM is a good series, so I do recommend it. Happy reading, everyone!

A wintery tale, inspired by legends of the Cailleach, "the divine hag", known in Scotland, as Beira, the personification of Winter. The legends are many; Beira is both destroyer, and life-bringer. She is mother to all other Gaelic deities. In some stories she has one eye, and sees directly to the truth, eschewing duality. In yet other legends she seeks the love of a hero, and if the hero sees her quality, she transforms from old hag, to beautiful maiden. This story is not fantastical, it's not even a retelling in the strict sense, of any piece of folklore. It is the story of a woman, moulded in Winter, who sees the stark truth of the world. It is the story of a human heart discovering that for every Winter, there is also Spring.

I'll be sure to mark each fanfiction contest entry clearly so that you can avoid spoilers or fandoms you aren't a part of :) This collection also includes contests for the @mythandlegend profile, but since that is obviously under the umbrella of fantasy, it isn't specified in the title!

The winter flurries used to bring so much joy to us, even to me, a sucker for the indoors. But ever since snow stopped falling, the children went back inside, and only we remain outdoors, waiting for the day the white ice comes back. We have even decided to read children's books for Heaven's sake. Well, Taytay decided. She always does. She thinks it'll help melt the heart of Mjalon, even mine. I'm stoic for a reason, I incapable of melting even to the most heartwarming novels. But this is different. For some odd reason, the quirky story gives off something droll. Something real.

Cailleach is known for her cold, for her power of death and destruction in the bitter bites of the Samhain (or, Winter). She had no qualms in performing her duties until one day during a blizzard when a lost spirit attached itself to her. What had the Fates in store for her? In her experience, coincidences did not exist. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ #4 in #winterfolklore - 25/05/2019 #275 in Short Story - 02/01/2018
