Juniper is the Autumn Princess. Ash is the Autumn Prince. They're going to get married; they know it, their parents know it, the whole Autumn Kingdom knows it. Eira is the Winter Princess. And the Winter Prisoner. She sits alone in the cell, and one of Juniper's duties is to feed her. Juniper knows Winter kills Autumn. Juniper knows Eira is a girl. But the Winter Prisoner is making her feel more alive than the Autumn Prince ever did.

Long ago, the King and Queen had created a competition to reward their Allies. This competition was one of storytelling with multiple boons going to the winner's people. However, as one of the newly acquired allies of the Winter Kingdom, the young bowwoman, Ivar, never planned to enter. But, when the newly crowned King Balthazar called upon her to represent her people in the competition she has no choice but to accept. But then she loses the one person she loves above all else and is forced to flee before her heart becomes as cold as the ice palace she calls home. But then she meets a young girl who seems happy enough, but soon shows that her happiness is artificial. But soon enough it isn't the fake emotions keeping them together, but real ones that are hidden beneath the surface along with a barrage of memories as they both try to figure out why exactly they were brought together and why they both seem so familiar.
