At a rest stop outside of Milwaukee he meets Scarlett. Scarlett hears him singing and calls him over, and offers him $500 to let her ride with him. Pierce agrees and the rest is yet to come.

While the majority of her graduating class are fortunate enough to go off to a university elsewhere, Norah Stratton is stuck in her home town, living with her recently divorced mother, and next door to her lifelong nemesis, Asher Tremaine.
