(THREE THOUSAND YEARS AGO) In the vast waters of the Caribbean Sea, hidden beneath the waves off the coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, lay Xibalba's Tide. A kingdom where underwater caves gleamed with jade and obsidian, and schools of rainbow fish swam through halls built by the ancient Maya of the deep. Here ruled Ah Kin Chel, the Ocean Enchanter. He us three thousand years old with hair as dark as storm clouds and eyes the color of turquoise lagoons. His beloved wife, Ix Chel Mayahuel, was the heart of their realm. She could summon rain to nourish the land above and calm hurricanes with her prayers. When a power "mad nahual" (shape-shifter) from the mainland sought to claim the ocean's magic for himself, Mayahuel sacrificed her life to bind his spirit within a sacred artifact. Her final gift to Ah Kin was the Cane of Chaac. A staff carved from the trunk of a ceiba tree that had grown from the ocean floor, inlaid with jade beads that held the power of every rainstorm and wave. With it, he could reverse any curse. If he retrieved it before the last jade even bead turned gray. In the chaos after her death, the staff was taken by land dwellers who saw it as a mere ancient relic. Grief stricken, Ah Kin sealed his kingdom and slept in the deepest cave of Xibalba's Tide for millennia, waiting for the moment when the stars of the Sak Tz'i' (Snake) constellation would align and let him walk as a human.
