"Just for the week please..", she said.
He quickly looked down and scribbled her name and "week only" next to it. She didn't see the silent optimism in his eyes or the rushed script. He didn't see how her fingers nervously fumbled as she dug in her purse.
Their eyes met as she handed over the money.
Their fingers didn't touch.
Around them the clang of weights resonated as muscle lost to gravity.
She felt a tap on her shoulder. "I'll be starting with Jacques so long.". It was Daniel. She had almost forgotten about him.
"Sure guys, I'll join you after my cardio."
When she turned to face him again, he was scrolling through Facebook. She hesitated, then took her change from the counter.
Before she turned away, she shot a glance at his slightly hunched back. There, written on the taunt material was:
