The tenth entry of the 2020-2021 Film Journal is "1917". First, I discuss my highly unique experience of seeing this film which broke my hiatus from movie theaters caused by the pandemic. Then, I take a hard-look at the narratives of war and how this film, perhaps the best picture of this cinematic year, portrays, subverts, and discusses those themes through visual and film storytelling.

The Grand Ducal Coup has succeeded. In order to avoid revolution, Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich, the Tsar's brother, takes the reins of the Government in Petrograd and declares himself regent with the support of all senior Grand Dukes. With a heavy heart, he sends his brother, wife and daughters into exile to the Isle of Man and becomes his nephew's tutor until he comes of age. Russia becomes a Constitutional Monarchy, and revolution is avoided. Meanwhile, the Tsar's uncle, Grand Duke Paul, who had settled in Russia in 1914 after spending several years in exile in Paris due to his scandalous marriage to a divorced woman, is adjusting to his old life. His children, Vladimir, an accomplished poet, Irina, and Natalia, will have to settle into a new world, far from everything they have always known. In the final days of the old regime, Vladimir falls in love with Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna, but the coup, Rasputin's murder, and their divided loyalties drift them apart. His sister Irina also finds love with Feodor, but he still sees her as a little girl. Natalia, the most extroverted and fiery of the siblings, makes an impression wherever she goes, leaving a trail of broken hearts in her wake. Together, they will have to navigate life, love, friendship, and heartbreak in a foreign country with a new position, new people, and unfamiliar conventions.

Grace, a 17-year-old lady living with her family in London has to adapt to the changing times. She understands that the coming war is only the beginning of an unstoppable change. For a girl that never felt like she belonged to the privileged life, she was brought up in, she only has one goal: survive in a bruised society that doesn't fit her anymore. On the other side, William is a young man that just lost his father and like so many will have to face an obstacle growing up and take on the heavy responsibility and of the titles that he inherited. Their meeting is the beginning of an epic of two worlds and opposite views and diverging spirits.

The two of them looked at one another. "You could've touched nearly fifty people by the time you grew delirious," Liam advocated, always the voice of reason. "Comrades, nurses, doctors." Sighing, he turned away and continued drinking the water. Literally, the only fucking thing remaining in the middle of a fucking war. Or Harry has his soulmate timer stuck at zero from the beginning of time. In between finding his soulmate in a war camp and solving the puzzle of the charismatic doctor who is treating him, all he can hope for is to live.
