Ironically, something was thrown from a window on the trip. The biggest turn of events revealed what he had been trying to hide from the world to the very people he had been hiding from. That's when he solidified the belief that he would rather live in isolation than deal with people. Being the biggest introvert in the city only helped push that motive. He would much rather live in the forest with about a million books than deal with the shit of the world. But, once the Mafia finds you, there's no going back.
