La peste negra ha invadido Europa. El set toma lugar en el Reino Unido. Específicamente, en Inglaterra. El protagonista es un rescatista que encuentra a gente enferma para tratarla y a la gente sana para refugiarla en un castillo. Los enfermos que piden piedad y muerte piadosa, un paciente sano que se aferra a la vida pero no le quedan esperanzas, un hombre de personal que cuenta a los residentes y un último: el que tira los cadáveres de la gente que no se salvó. El antagonista es un doctor de la plaga que intenta experimentar con los pacientes para investigar acerca de la enfermedad, causándoles dolor y agonía en el proceso. Podríamos decir que él, más que buscar la cura, está torturando a los moribundos para su placer.

Konstancyja urodziła się, gdy jej rodzice dopiero co ślub wzięli. Jej matula młodziutka szlachcianka, która nie zdolna była wrócić do domu. Ojczulek natomiast niezwykle gwałtowny ataman kozacki. Długo niezgodni w wielu kwestiach, ale oboje kochali swą pierworodną córę nad życie. Na Rusi jednak gwałtowne zmiany zachodziły, Tatrzy się krzątali jak na swoim, a między Kozakami do różnić dochodziło i było niebezpiecznie. Sam ataman Jurko Bohun zaczął się zamartwiać o sytuację, a zwłaszcza o córę, synków i żonę. Konstancyja Bohunówna dorastała w przeczuciu, że ma potrafić zadbać o siebie i młodszych braci, dlatego wyrosła z niej stepowa piękność o buntowniczej duszy. Niejeden chciałby ten kwiat powziąć, a niektórzy i pokory nauczyć. Ona jednak niechętna unikała miłowania. Jeno wystarczyło, by poznała odpowiedniego, a jej serce rwało się do kochania. Tak samo było ze sercem młodego Lacha, który spotkał Konstancyję, gdy był w drodze na Kijów z poselstwem królewskim. Niespotykana przychylność losu krzyżowała ich drogi raz po raz, nie zamierzając ich rozdzielić.
