In the realm where kingdoms float amidst the sacred clouds, there stood an ancient empire blessed by the heavens. Countless people dwelt within its jade walls, living under the rule of a mighty king-stern of face, fierce in temper, and feared by all who served him.
Within the palace grounds labored a group of young maidens, all born with celestial gifts. They could soar through the skies like swallows of spring, their powers a sign of noble blood. Yet among them lived one girl-quiet, gentle, and painfully ordinary. No matter how hard she tried, no spiritual power answered her call.
Because she possessed no gift, the others treated her as less than dust. She worked as their servant, bearing their burdens in silence, while whispers followed her like shadows.
For a thousand years, the legend of the Snake Goddess had been passed down through their clan. It was said she once saved their people from destruction, and to this day, they honored her with undying gratitude. Every year, a grand festival was held beneath the floating lanterns of the sky to celebrate her divine sacrifice.
But only those with powers were permitted to attend.
As the maidens prepared, their voices buzzed with excitement.
"They say the King himself shall appear tonight." "They say he is handsome beyond compare... yet cold as winter steel." "To behold his face is a rare fortune."
Curiosity and fear filled the air like gathering storm clouds.
And among them stood the powerless girl... watching, waiting.
For fate was stirring. And the heavens had not forgotten her.
