Ren Takahashi is sixteen, average by most measures, and perfectly fine with that. His entire routine is getting to school early, sitting in the back of the library or a classroom, and keeping to himself. He lives with his grandmother.
Fujimoto Aoi transfers in on a quiet October morning and ends up sitting beside his table. The library is quiet and rather secluded. And Ren, for better or worse, has never been able to leave a thing alone, which engages a conversation, as he confronts her for holding a book upside down, as something about her doesn't add up.
