Japan has changed. Centuries ago, it was an isolated island nation that consisted of different clans. Now, it is a place with vast cities under one leader. But one thing has stayed the same throughout these centuries... Shinobi. Masters of espionage, subversion, and assassination. However, there are now three types: Good, Evil, and Renegade. Enter Homura, an Evil Shinobi in training at Hebijo Clandestine Girl's Academy. One day, her and her friends are sent on a mission by Dōgen to assassinate a Renegade Shinobi. During this mission, Homura and her team come across a mysterious scroll. On the scroll is what appears to be a ritual. Homura reads this ritual aloud, unknowingly summoning something... Harbingers, warriors who utilize martial arts with the power of bound spirits, have been protecting Tokyo for ages, helping rid Japan of trespassing evil spirits. With a new rise in the number of rogue Harbingers committing atrocities, society has become wary of it's longtime protectors, bringing about the emergence of special a police unit, R-26. Like a Harbinger these officers utilize inner reiki but unlike them, who use old fashion weaponry and bound entities, they've taken a more modern approach to killing spirit, shunning the ways of their counterparts who combat evil with evil. Nagaku, a thirteen year old boy and the son of a missing renowned Harbinger, is unable to use his inner reiki which alienates him from the other students at the Shibuya Harbinger academy. Having lost his mother shortly after his birth, the teen is raised by his Grandfather Tanzan, once a powerful Harbinger in his youthful days. After sensing that his former student, a rogue Harbinger, would attempt to unseal the spirit of Yamato no Orochi, old Tanzan deliberately binds the ancient Yokai of legend to his grandson. This precedence sets off a chain reaction in the realm of Yomi where the three leaders are devising a devious plan to eradicate the last Tennin.
