There was something about Lyra Forger. At fourteen, she carried herself with a calmness of someone who had learned early that it was better to be quiet than speak. In the orphanage she was the girl who never cried, and then she met Anya - the mischievous girl who saw through her. They became sisters long before they both were Forgers. When Twilight appeared one morning with a polite smile masking something in his eyes, Lyra didn't expect her life to change again. But it did. Now she lived in a tidy apartment under the roof of a spy and an assassin - a home full of secrets. Lyra rarely spoke of the past. She didn't need to. Her eyes said enough, sometimes too much. Still, when Anya laughed or tugged at her sleeve, the weight inside her seemed to lift. And though she would never admit it aloud, she had begun to believe that perhaps - for the first time - this life, this family, might be real. At Eden Academy, her calm composure stood out and wasn't eager to impress anyone. One boy in particular seemed to watch her with the same interest, she watched him; Demetrius Desmond. Their exchanges were few, but they were two quiet minds, circling each other like stars caught in the same orbit. And though neither would admit it, they recognized something in each other. Not only that but she herself is a telepath and her dog Bond capable of seeing the future! Together this strange family must work to help Anya become a Imperial Scholar and get closer to the Desmond Family. What happens when Anya asks for something as bizarre as an older brother?

Yor Briar needed a fake boyfriend to put her brother at ease. Loid Forger needed a fake wife for his daughter's interview at a prestigious college. Anya ends up playing cupid for her father and the pretty girl he met at the tailor shop. A widowed father, a lonely woman, and a very observant child become an unexpected family. An alternate universe where there was no war in the characters' childhood, nor any secret experiments. Anya can't read minds, Bond can't see the future, Loid is just a doctor, and Yor is just a city hall employee.
