Mica wanted to spend the summer at camp with her friends. Instead, she is sent to Isla Mujeres, off Mexico's Caribbean coast, to stay with her grandmother Clara-and with a sea she has absolutely no interest in.
Until the first night, when she hears it sing.
A shard of glass appears in the sand, glowing in the dark. A strange mark appears on her skin, and no one can explain it. Soon, the entire town begins to look at her as if they know something she doesn't.
Fifty years ago, a girl in Mica's family failed to pay what her blood owed the sea.
Eight days remain until Mica turns fourteen.
The sea knows how to count.
