In the austere Meiji era, Yuusaku Hanazawa's virginity was not merely a military requirement as a bearer of the sacred flag. For Kyoko, it was an oath. An unspoken promise that, amidst a corrupt world, their love would remain pure and intact until the officer returned from the battlefield.
However, the altar upon which that promise was sacrificed was not a beautiful wedding ceremony, but the cold, blood-soaked trenches of the Battle of Port Arthur.
Yuusaku fell in battle, leaving Kyoko shattered, along with the sacred secret they had guarded. Whilst the whole world glorified Yuusaku's death as that of a hero, Lieutenant Tsurumi arrived bearing a truth colder than a bullet: Yuusaku had been shot from behind by the brother he loved most dearly, Hyakunosuke Ogata.
Armed with grief and vengeance, Kyoko set out for the snow-covered lands of Hokkaido. She was not seeking safety; she merely demanded answers from the cold-eyed angel of death who had once lived within the heart-warming stories of her late fiancé.
