Not only does he feel lonely, he feels miserable by the fact that his appearance probably scares the other princes, or they just don't turn out to be gay. Zhongli wanted to check in on his people, and used the Traveler's return to Liyue as an excuse to throw a party to check in on them. The positive atmosphere becomes too much for Childe who finds a place to take a break, and he gets an unexpected encounter along the way.
