One night, Lewis heads to Mako Island to do some experiments and tests, still desperate for answers; and his life changes forever. It tells them that they must leave their families and live together as mermaids. The moon makes them promise to do so, and by the time the girls come to their senses, it's too late. They have to leave and live a new life. This is probably going to take place in early season two, after the girls get their enhanced powers. I'll try to get Ash in the story somehow.
