Raelin, an 18-year-old girl who has not yet lived her life. A slave to a dangerous king, nothing but a display of how powerful the false king really is.

After her mother's death, Raelin was imprisoned by the Usurper King. Believing that there was no other place for her in the world, she stayed and endured the horrors of the court. No way to leave and no way to help those outside of the castle walls, every chance she had at freedom was taken from her and left her scared to try again. So she stayed, by force or willingness is unknown to those that tried to find and rescue her.

After years of captivity in what is seen as a luxurious castle, Raelin finds herself craving the freedom that she has been denied. She craves the type of love that she thought she would never get the chance to feel or experience. She wants to feel loved and safe again as she once did. To have relationships that matter, not forced upon her or used as a power move.
