On Lilia Well's sixteenth birthday, she opens a mysterious present that isn't labeled with a return address - and is instantly transported into her favorite fantasy novel, accidentally killing the main character, Theresa, as she does so. And since the novel was the first in an unwritten series, Lilia has no idea what comes next in the storyline.
As Lilia battles to get home along with Theresa's roommate, Connor, the true nature of the novel's world is revealed to her, as is the characteristics of the people and the brutal animals. Despite all of this, however, as Lilia starts to fall for Connor, she begins to wonder if getting home is actually what she wants after all.
