Whoever said what doesn't kill you makes you stronger is full of crap. Being hurt only makes you aware of the pain actions can cause. You learn to be careful of who you let close to your heart. You learn to protect yourself from those who only wish to use you for their own gain.
Most of the time, this knowledge comes from a heartbreak. Even then, you don't realize what is happening until it's too late, and you're in too deep. Sometimes you don't even get a say in who you let close.
That's what happened to Evie. Everything was as good as it could be for Evie and her father. They didn't live a fancy life or have nice things; they didn't need them. However, not having nice things can lead to devastating events.
Evie thought she was okay and strong, but she didn't know what time had in store for her.
