Ribbeté is a hotheaded toad traveling to the Kingdom of New Rana in order to fulfill his sword master's dying wish. Upon arriving in the City in the Sea, he finds deception, danger, and a trio of allies--three of the most courageous and ferocious frogs of the king's once-famous but now disbanded Castelmores: Armand, Portaus, and Phibby.

Over the course of their tenuous friendship, the four find themselves at each other's throats, defending the honor of the Castelmores against the sentinels of an unknown dark figure, uncovering a plot to overthrow New Rana's throne, and helping Ribbeté find the fiend that set him on this course--a course of struggle, opposition, and heartbreak that leads him to an untimely and ultimate end.
