The multiverse is filled with infinite dimensions represented by fountains, only those with powers can reach them, and only those who reach them can go through them. Thea, a foster child, finally decides to escape the endless loop of foster care by using the strange abilities she had been born with. On her run through New York City, she gets caught by Gwen, who Thea discovers can do the same as herself. She is introduced to Gwen's friend Carter and together, they uncover the mysteries of a letter written to Thea from her parents. They go to find the fountains that her parents mentioned and discover that they are to be the next protectors of the fountains.
