they were all nearly human, but not human enough

Years ago, an alien race invaded Earth. They remained unknown for a long time as they examined humans from a distance.
And then they attacked.
They attempted to kill leaders of large societies in order to gain power and succeeded in certain areas. However, they had underestimated the strength of humans and were forced to flee.
The invasion was never spoken about and eventually curiosity died down and rumours stopped.
The aliens left things though, things that the billions of humans did not know about. Hybrids. These Hybrids were human enough to blend into a normal society but different enough that the aliens were unhappy.
They wanted the Hybrids dead.
And now these Hybrids were on the run.
