After many years of war with human like creatures who have the potential to cause painful dreams,known as "Nightmares",modern day Florida is left in nothing more then a desolate land. Those who survive the lethal war decide to instead of killing all the remaining Nightmares that survive the war,they should banish them to a underground town known as the "Shadows" while certain live in the "Havens" a town build above the once know"sunshine state" where the surviving humans live.But after 19 year old Connor meets a rebel nightmare he begins to wounder if nightmares are as bad as there said to be and if he should fight to defend the nightmares

Her only escape from this twisted reality is a creature named Shadow. A terrifying creature that is somehow more humane than the so-called humans around her. Shadow could easily take all her problems away, but Melody refuses to take the easy way out. That is, until she just couldn't take it anymore, she takes Shadow's offer and soon her life got better. Her bullies started disappearing, showing up dead in the woods. Their bodies badly mutilated, almost unrecognizable. Life at school started getting better, she finally had human friends and even a boyfriend. Her "father" was found dead at her house. The torture had finally ended.
