Maverick, older brother of four sisters and son of a single mom is joining The Awesome Charter School. This transition is supposed to change his future for the best. As the school year dramatically advances, and his family's foundation crumbles, it is evident that Mav's education is not what he needs to be focused on.
Raisa, the delinquent foster kid that everyone avoids: an Outsider. She's lived a lonely life, moving in and out of abusive homes rapidly. Her past is something she never talks about... Because she has never lived a fairy tale. Soon enough, her worlds and walls come crashing down as she struggles to grow up in her abusive foster home and deal with the questions of mental illness.
Artemis, Victor Dunn Academy's academic prodigy, wrestles with his parents' increasing pressure to achieve perfect grades as he attempts to also come to terms with his sister's maneuver out of his family. Questioning his parents' motives for his success and high school in general, Artemis struggles to manage his social mask and friends at Victor Dunn.
Marie, a girl vastly outnumbered by white attendants at her school faces conflict every day. Her parents are both immigrants - her mother from Brazil and her father from Colombia. Marie battles against prejudice and poverty as she starts high school - and attempts to live a normal life in the face of it all.

Somehow, all four individuals cross paths. Hear their stories; for they are the Pretenders.
