“There was a storm coming to Carleon, Guane could feel it in his bones.”

Beneath the rain clouds of Carleon two enemies clash under the flag of Arthur, Merlin and Mordred the King's nephew. Meanwhile Merlin's homeland Maine is in trouble, its King a fairy is keen to make peace with the vengeful elfish folk of Elfrey, but everyone else including his youngest son Ortwin has other ideas. The kingdom is already tottering on the edge of anarchy so when a giant steals a woman from the snarling human settlement of Overdeare, Maine looks likely to implode.

This is the prologue of the Maine tales trilogy, it sets the scene for the rest of the series as well as introducing numerous amounts of important characters.
