"It is better to die like a king, than to live like a slave" These are the words written on the last page of his diary before he is found dead - stabbed with his own knife. Gulab Singh Deora, the self made banker in British India is no more. Enter the detective Victoria 'Raani' Eastbourne, as eccentric as her name. Assisted by the deceased man's son and the local Police chief, Syed Qureshi, she tries to connect the dots as events continue to occur - disappearance of precious jade memorabilia, sightings of a mysterious woman in night and... a second murder.
