This is a short piece of creative writing I did for an English assessment with the theme of success earlier this year. In it I tell the story of how I went against all expectations to pursue my unlikely passion for acting and drama, to achieve a person success that proved everyone wrong. A YEAR-LONG DAY (one-sided slowburn with a twist)
"Dear diary, To my surprise, today we talked a lot. It's been a while since we've chatted like that. He's been very cold to me lately, constantly ignoring me. But during the second lesson he suddenly said that he would recognize my handwriting among all others. Could it be that there are indeed some hidden feelings behind his rude behavior? Can my unrequited love grow into a mutual one? There's still time until our graduation... And, in the meantime, after school my boyfriend had a surprise waiting for me again. He is so romantic. How am I supposed to tell him that I am still in love with my classmate? "A living dog is better than a dead lion". So what should I do if I want to keep the dog by my feet while trying to resurrect the lion?" This book is my personal treasure because it is written based on my genuine school diary. During the last year of high school, I fought for my one-sided love while dating a cool guy, and, had an English teacher fall in love with me all at the same time. "How many romance books do you read?" Devin asks me. I shrug. "I like them," I say. I keep browsing, running my fingers along the spines. "So, you like romance then?" he asks me. I nod. "What's your favorite part of a love story?" "I like the very first kiss, but I like the second one even more," I say. I bite my lip and look at him. Oh. My. God. What the hell am I doing? Am I flirting? I think that I'm actually flirting. With Devin. Devin, my best friend. I have officially lost my mind. I should probably stop. But I can't seem to. "Will you grab me that one?" I ask. I point above my head, my back's pressed against the bookcase. He locks his gaze on mine and reaches over me to grab the book I asked for. "Thanks." I don't move and neither does he. Riley and Devin have been best friends forever-since Kindergarten. It's Senior year of high school, now. And it's always been simple, Riley's got his back, he's got hers. But as life goes on Riley can't help but wonder if maybe he's not just her best friend, if she likes him as possibly something more. As her feelings deepen and become something greater it becomes more evident that she's falling, really hard. No matter how hard Riley tries she can't stop falling, she can't stop from loving him. Even if it tears her to pieces or even if it destroys their friendship. Pretty soon Riley is going to have to choose between walking the safe line of friendship or taking the unpaved path of love.
