Twilight Sparkle and her friends travel to the Crystal Empire for her first princess summit. Twilight feels both nervous and excited about the event and is self-conscious about wearing her crown. However, her friends are supportive as always. When they meet with the other princesses, Celestia notices how tired Twilight and her friends look after their journey and sends all eight of them off to bed. Later that night, a cloaked unicorn sneaks into the castle and steals Twilight's crown. The next morning, Princess Celestia identifies the thief as Sunset Shimmer, her former student. The princesses explain that the mirror from which Sunset Shimmer escaped is a gateway to an alternate world and task Twilight with going into this other world to retrieve her crown.
