Johanna sentía gran fascinación por las personas, a fin de cuentas estaba a punto de graduarse de psicóloga. Por ello, para su proyecto final decidió estudiar a las personas más complicadas y despreciables que encontró, y de ese modo descubrir porque son así.
Ella pensó que podría estudiar a cada una de estas personas sin involucrarse emocionalmente, de todos modos cada una de ellas a su modo le parecía repulsiva, excepto una.
Sin embargo, descubrirá que hasta la persona que más desprecia en este mundo tiene una historia que ocultar; la historia de como perdió la inocencia.

With a dead mother and an alcoholic father who refused to pay the bills, she did everything she could to make a life for herself, and she was only 16 years old. The only thing she wanted was to get the hell out of Shermer, Illinois, so for the most part, she stayed out of trouble and kept her grades up as high as she could. Pursuing an art career was her dream, and she was destined to get far in order to obtain it. Andrew Clark was one of those nice-popular stereotypes. He was a friendly face, and quite frankly did not care about who he was or wasn't allowed to associate with. Being an aspiring therapist and future D1 athlete, he craved for his father's approval. Andrew was a kind human being, and he was very susceptive when it came down to the ideals surrounding mental health. His father resented him for that, which made that aspiration so out of reach that he did anything he could to grasp it, even if it involved harming himself in the process. Esther wasn't one for talking about her feelings, but Andrew's genuine persona made it so much easier to do so. A Saturday detention in March of 1984 had turned into a glorified therapy session, and ultimately, they realized how their fellow peers cope, react, and engage, and they simply became more open to emotional sensitivity. Despite what it may seem, everyone has a lot going on deep down, and judging them for it is pointless. They say what's in the past keep it in the past but I wanted to know all about my past. It was things that I didn't know and that I wanted and needed to know! But my life turned upside down when my past is exactly what I should have left alone. Now if you ask me how it all began, I don't exactly remember but I know it started when I moved in with my grandma who I haven't met in all my twenty years of living. I have been in and out of foster homes since I can remember, living with families I knew nothing about. Being the outcast and them constantly asking me what's wrong because I simply did not speak. The only thing that kept me sane was my good grades throughout school. I got the satisfaction of doing the one thing that people kept telling me over and over I couldn't do. I stayed to myself and graduated high school with honors, getting a full-ride scholarship to any college of my choice. Of course, by having this accomplishment, it didn't make it any easier for me between my foster families. To them, I became the girl who was better than them. But I didn't care because when I turned twenty I finally got to start making my own choices. This is where I wonder if the first choice I made was the right one. The first choice I made was to go live off-campus with my grandmother during my first semester in college. I ask myself how could I be so stupid? But you will see just how stupid I was.
