Harley can't remember what it feels like to have a place of her own in a family of her own. Since her father died she's been from one foster home to another. The only reprieve she's ever had were the brief stays with his best friend from the police force, Walt and his family. Now that she has the option to stay for good she doesn't know if she wants it. It doesn't matter if the only place that has felt even close to like home has been with them. She knows what it feels like to be unwanted, an intrusive presence. She can't bear for that to happen with them. Why not leave when she has this one piece of good left? Then there's everything she feels for Ben, Walt's son. Complicated doesn't even begin to explain those feelings. She could ruin everything. Still, she can't help but remember all the times she sat alone and afraid and thought just one thing...anywhere but here...

Ben, a relatively normal teenager, lives a life on schedule. He is trapped by the boring cog of a machine that his mother controlled. A new neighbor brings a light to him that he didn't know would come. Just when he starts to feel like a truly normal person, things unravel quickly and send him scraping to do what he has to do to be reunited with his old life. With two unimaginably loyal friendships, he has to find a way to escape the plans for his life and get back to the two people he loves and trusts. Ben journeys through Hell and grows into something that he never thought he could, or would be. The only thing he can't seem to find, though, is the answer to one important question. Would they still be waiting for him?
