"How much longer?" "Not long." "...okay." "You'll be fine. Everything will be alright. Even though we're living in a death zone. And have almost no chance of survival. We'll live." "...I trust you." ••• Bree Roberts is living in a world where the laws of old don't apply to anything. The police didn't exist. The Walmart where she lives sucks. And her best friend has been in a coma for eight years. Actually, living doesn't summarize what she's doing. She's just been following the rules laid out to her the day her father died. But now she has a chance to live her life free of the rules of them. The rules of the ones who invaded her home. The Killers. That's what everyone has been calling them for the past eight years. With her friends tagging along for the walk to the free land, they encounter many dangers along the way. Including the mysterious Rose Keeper. With everyone on edge and the Killers closing in on them, Bree decides to let her feelings chose for her.

"You have fifty five minutes left," "I'm not going anywhere, I can't allow you to release that virus. Drew let's out a chuckle, "I'm not a murderer," Drew stops smiling for the first time and frowns, "I don't know what bullshit they've been feeding you amateurs about me but I'm not the bad guy," she shakes her head and huffs, "you are the bad guys, not me," "You expect me to believe that," Joel asks rhetorically. Drew smiles and shrugs, "no, but you have forty seven minutes left, I really don't want to kill you," "Then don't and let me bring you in," Drew let's out a laugh, "so they can torture me and lock me up in a metal cell where I'll live like an animal till I die?" "This is my case," "I know Joel, but they'll 'take it from here' the moment you bring me in and you'll never see me again," Joel frowns and realises Drew is right, they will take her away, "don't you deserve it?" Joel asks lifting her eyebrows. Drew smiles and nods slightly, "let's say I do; do you even know what I did?" Joel shakes her head. "What I did Joel; was find out I was the bad guy the whole time," Drew whispers harshly. Joel shakes her head, "you were helping people, bringing them in and..." "And what Joel? Killing them? Imprison them? What do you think they do with all those weapons?" Drew shakes her head, "I won't allow you to take this one; I can't, and I'll kill you if I have to," Joel sighs, "I really can't just abort the mission without a reason," Drew points at the bracelet on her wrist, "break that, they'll be here in ten minutes and you'll have an excuse to aborting the mission," Joel frowns, "a false alarm?" "No, you've been shot," just then Drew pulls the trigger hitting Joel in her chest missing her heart only by inches.
