Em Brooks is leading a boring and normal teenage girl life with all high-school drama included, until Alec Cavillo walks into her school. The minute she sees him she knows that this boy is different. Something about him makes her want to find out more. Even though many people are trying to talk to him and get him as a friend, he seems to let no one in.
Em is fascinated by him, just the way he moves smoothly through the crowd, just the constant distant and calculating look in his golden eyes - as if he's constantly thinking about an earlier and happier time - it blows her mind. There's something about him that she just can't let go.
Determined to find out more about him, she finds the perfect way to get a little bit closer to this distant, unusual boy; the annual school trip to Brasilia which every senior year student can join.
But what if this trip turns out to become a real nightmare?

"I walked over to where Aaron was sitting on the ground, kneeling so that I was face-to-face with him. He was wearing a blank expression on his face so I guess he didn't really care if I kissed him or not. I took in a deep breath before taking his face in both of my hands and swooping down to kiss him. The protagonist deals with real life struggles every day, including the death of his friend, his dad who left him at an early age, and the pain of seeing his little sister being hurt by her boyfriend. He also has to take charge and become a hero for those who can't against an unwavering bully in a far-away world. My book blends fiction with reality, as the reader follows along in the life of a shy high school student who gets thrown into many situations he must overcome as he finds out who he truly is and why it is him who needs to save the world, while keeping the reader guessing every step of the way.Complete
