Emma and Elias Swan grew up together in the foster system, they have always been together, and are each other's best friend. When Emma and Elias were in their late teens, they were arrested and were separated for the first time, by being placed in separate cellblocks. While in jail, Elias found out that he was going to be a father, but when the time came to raise the child, he turned him away and put him up for a closed adoption. Ten years later, Elias' son went looking for his birth father, to bring him and his sister to a town in Maine called Storybrooke, to break a curse which the Evil Queen placed on everyone, causing them to forget who they really are and become separated from their loved ones.
