It was some type of behavioural punishment method; another trial set by the principal.

The students who kept getting into trouble were paired up and set activities and chores to complete. Some of which included: cleaning graffiti, picking up rubbish, having extra curriculum tasks to do together, etc.

Atticus and Vaun are subject to this new punishment method because they decided to deface the school. They never really spoke before being paired up - Atticus being your usual shithead kid while Vaun just tended to be annoying.

But, if they wanted to live through the school year, they're going to have to learn to get along.
