When you see everything you've every know being taken from you in front of your eyes you realize that you are not the same person you once were...in this case we have Ember who had everything take from her at 4 and now she craves vengeance above all.

When you finished your purpose, you'd be killed as a sacrifice, as an example. People here believed in a better world after, so they sought no delay in getting there. Once you were done with your given job, people said you were finished with your purpose in life, which in the case was clearing the bad out of the world, and thus system went on uninterrupted for thousands of years until I, Ember came along because I was The Pristine
