For my friend and peer Anthony

An original short story I wrote, exploring the gender roles, segregation, and prohibition in the 1920s with a "almost love story". In the beginning we meet James, a curious young boy who finds an old pocket watch. Intrigued by what he finds inside, he asks Raymond, his babysitter, about it. Raymond was shocked that the boy had found the pocket watch, but reluctantly tells him the somber story.

Hazel, a young white female from the 1920s, is infatuated by the Harlem Renaissance and the spreading black culture. She starts sneaking away in the evenings to see all of the wonderful music, but she is still seeking for more. One night she happens on an illegal speak easy, where her life changes forever.

Prohibition is the law of the land, but Nellie needs cash - after socking a gangster in the face, she's got ten days to make it right. Frightened and caught empty-handed, Nellie turns bootlegger. She accepts a job from her sly friend Lola to pick up some liquor. It should be a cinch, seeing as how Nellie's dependable mechanic friend Felix volunteers to help drive her car. But an encounter at a speakeasy sends idealistic cop Lester on the chase - and he's not exactly looking for cash. As tensions between Chicago lawmen and gangs grow worse by the day, all the fast talking in the world might not be enough to keep Nellie and her friends out of jail. Or alive. * * * * * * * * * * Felix drums his fingers along the steering wheel. A man exits the other car, dressed to the nines with a fine-looking fedora. A very bad feeling begins to swirl inside my chest. He's certainly no cop. The attendant is hurrying with the pump. Felix has tensed beside me, staring with fascination directly ahead. "Are they watching us?" "The one fella is." Felix presses his lips together. But he knows we can't leave. We need the gas. Felix has a back-up can of it stowed somewhere but that's for emergencies. Is this a real emergency? One of the other fellas hops out. Before the door slams I notice what his still-seated friend is holding. A tommy gun. My skin prickles. Felix pales. We're just playing at bootlegging now. But those folks are the real deal-complete with hired guns to protect their hooch. Felix's hand moves to the starter and I knock it away. The one in the fedora has seen us. He casually makes his way over and I know our story isn't good enough; this guy will notice we snooped even when we didn't mean to and we'll be in some sort of a mess. So I ditch our story. I throw myself at Felix and kiss him as thoroughly as I know how.

He rushes behind a car as I'm shooting at him as he's shooting while running away. "Imma Kill You Manny!" I growl at him angrily as I keep firing shots as my gun clicks. "Fuck." I grumbled as I duck behind a car as well. I take out my magazine as I started to load it quickly not caring about my finger prints being on them. He reloaded as well as he must've had a extra clip because he immediately started firing again. Glass shattering as Shayla was laying on the ground balled up. --------------------------- "Nobody told you to beat up Manny! That's your fault." I tell him as we started to calm down now. "Nobody told you to fuck him either." He tells me as I shake my head at him tearing up again. "Fuck you James! You fucked my best friend. YOU GOT HER PREGNANT!" I tell him as he sits there in silence. We both do. five minutes go by of both of us not saying anything. So I do. Two wrongs don't make a right, but what can you expect from teenagers?. James, Shayla, and Nina all become circumstances to the choices they each make. But down here emotional decisions can cost you your life. Viewer discretion is advised.
