Ignoring each other like we didn't even exist was easy. That's the way it's always been. Until one starry, blood moonlit night changes everything we thought we had ever known. When what started as a birthday toast quickly turns into a chance to get the idea of each other out of our system, it's clear that nothing good could come from it... Even if the feeling is nothing but good. Before we know it we find ourselves fastened together like a stitch of thread on a vintage shirt, holding on for the crude interruption to our well thought out lies. There's just one thing about lies though, little by little they show their truth. The rules are simple -don't date your best friends brother. But unfortunately... Mental Case-- JOHN BENDER
Beyond being in the same class at Shermer High School in Shermer, Illinois, Claire Standish, Andrew Clark, John Bender, Cassie McClair, Brian Johnson and Allison Reynolds have little in common, and with the exception of Claire and Andrew, do not associate with each other in school. In the simplest and in their own terms, Claire is a princess, Andrew an athlete, John a criminal, Brian a brain, and Allison a basket case and Cassie a Mental Case. But one other thing they do have in common is a nine hour detention in the school library together on Saturday, March 24, 1984, under the direction of Mr. Vernon, supervising from his office across the hall. Each is required to write a minimum one thousand word essay during that time about who they think they are. At the beginning of those nine hours, each, if they were indeed planning on writing that essay, would probably write something close to what the world sees of them, and what they have been brainwashed into believing of themselves. But based on their adventures during that nine hours, they may come to a different opinion of themselves and the other six.Concluída

With a dead mother and an alcoholic father who refused to pay the bills, she did everything she could to make a life for herself, and she was only 16 years old. The only thing she wanted was to get the hell out of Shermer, Illinois, so for the most part, she stayed out of trouble and kept her grades up as high as she could. Pursuing an art career was her dream, and she was destined to get far in order to obtain it. Andrew Clark was one of those nice-popular stereotypes. He was a friendly face, and quite frankly did not care about who he was or wasn't allowed to associate with. Being an aspiring therapist and future D1 athlete, he craved for his father's approval. Andrew was a kind human being, and he was very susceptive when it came down to the ideals surrounding mental health. His father resented him for that, which made that aspiration so out of reach that he did anything he could to grasp it, even if it involved harming himself in the process. Esther wasn't one for talking about her feelings, but Andrew's genuine persona made it so much easier to do so. A Saturday detention in March of 1984 had turned into a glorified therapy session, and ultimately, they realized how their fellow peers cope, react, and engage, and they simply became more open to emotional sensitivity. Despite what it may seem, everyone has a lot going on deep down, and judging them for it is pointless.
