So this is basically like a Hamilton thing? I'm not sure it's better to explain it.
Okay so. Thomas(Jefferson) and James(Madison) have had feelings for each other for a while. When Thomas confesses his love to James, James is over the moon and also confesses his love. A few weeks pass by and Alexander/Alex(Hamilton) joins Thomas in his job. Thomas suddenly falls for Alex. The thing is, Alex doesn't feel the same way until after a while. One day Thomas invites Alex round while James is off somewhere, and Thomas & Alex get heated™💦💦. James catches on, and does not forgive Thomas. James is an emotional wreck, while he lets Thomas and Alexander carry on with their relationship.
