Since losing his hand at the Battle of Hastings, Breton archer Guillaume FitzBegard has struggled to find a purpose in life, but even Gui should be able to accomplish one simple task. He hadn't expected the supposedly mild bride in question to be the strong-minded woman he encounters on the journey, nor that the feelings he develops go much deeper than they should for a friend's fiancée. Swearing to protect her foster-sister Sigrid from a marriage she doesn't want, Aldyth claims her identity. As the companions journey back to York she must deny her attraction to the scarred, hurting man she believes is promised to another.
As Gui and Aldyth grow closer both struggle to resist a love they believe is forbidden, and which may become irrelevant if they can't survive the journey home through a dangerous and outlaw ridden country.
