I've dreamed of the perfect marriage ever since I was a little girl: a marriage complete with a hardworking husband while I tended to the home and our children, preferably four little rugrats to call my own. I dreamed of a life filled with laughter, joy, and success, a life we built together. I dreamed of growing old next to my husband, creating a great love story to tell our grandchildren someday. 'I love you,' Asher told me while the police man handcuffed him. The night glimmered in his green eyes. His dark hair was tousled, strands like conductors of the energy in his chest. In other circumstances, a few years ago, I would've easily retorted, but there was a humid substance being loaded in the unfiltered air that wrapped around my throat, and I couldn't speak. If I tried, I'd break into a full fledged scream, and possibly end up handcuffed as well. I took many steps back, retreating from the source of toxicity, suppressing a pseudo feeling of guilt but being grasped by its hands so easily I could simply lunge at my boyfriend and tell him everything would be all right, that he had done the right thing, and that I was so proud of him. But as much as I wished him to, he wasn't a child anymore, and I had ceased to be the girl he idealized. The man pushed Asher's head into the vehicle, and he repeated "I love you" over and over, like a fresh mantra. I didn't doubt his words. But there were just a few things that still made sense to me, and his voice was in the past. A relic that was rooted in a better context. Us.
