Why do bad things happen to good people? A question that his boy is making himself more then ever this days. From the beginning we see a 17 year old boy, struggling to finish high School, filled up with insecurities, mental health issues, a toxic family home, and impossible standards to live up to. He has learn to not only hate his life, but to want finish it off as fast as possible. Close to finally graduating high school his English teacher, Mr Steve, assigns the class a special progect. "To be able to see life through different eyes, and write about it." For this, Mr Steve gets his class to assist a hospital 3 times a week, and assigns each student, with a patient. This is the moment where this boy meets Royal, a cancer sick 17 year old girl, that has lived in a hospital her hole life, but still finds beauty and meaning in it. Through out the report the boy gets more and more involved in Royal's life, spending unfortunately moments together. But through out the journey he asks himself more and more. When he first laid eyes on her, he fell in love with her tattoos, her attitude, her charm. He didn't understand why he kept coming back? He was intrigued with her. No matter what she said or did to him, he kept coming back. He was impatient but would wait for her. . . . She never understood how someone could keep a smile on their face everyday. The way he always kept a positive look on life. He never frowned. He was the flavour bubblegum that everyone wanted. The go-to ice cream flavour that you always get on a sunny day. That one summer vacation that you'll never forget. She hated his smile, his laugh, his eyes. She hated that she wanted to see that smile everyday. She hated that she couldn't stay away from him. Sometimes, I'm not always sure what to do. I feel like I'm always wrong, like I'm never good enough. I'm invisible and it's as if I don't exist. If I really didn't exist, I don't think anyone would care. I'm all alone in this great big world, I'm lost. Maddie has never been good enough for anyone. Her perfect sister, Megan, always manages to outshine her. Her father never pays attention to her, because he's always worried about Megan.
